Ellsworth Kelly is one of the leading exponents of abstract art after the second war. His works mainly paintings and sculptures reject any categorization constantly searching for simplicity. Its biggest innovation is the introduction of the use of canvases contouring instead of the common rectangular or circular. The monochromatic painting and the production series are key features accompanying him for a lifetime.
One technique that is pretty dear to Kelly is the automatic painting that derived from surrealism. Thanks to this method in 1950 come to life his first abstract works. He reclined the canvas on the floor and let fall on it fragments of old drawings that later glued on in the exact position in which they relied. To celebrate the ninetieth birthday of the artist, the MoMA of New York exposes, from 23 May to 8 September, the first series of paintings made ??by Kelly after the departure from New York to get to Spancertown in 1970.
