Until March 1, 2015, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in The Hague hosts the first Dutch exhibition of works by Mark Rothko over the past forty years. Rothko was one of the first artists from the current of abstraction to give a spiritual aspect to his work trying to convey emotional overwhelming feelings.
The interaction that the artist has tried to create with his audience in the 50s, played a key role in the formation of his worldwide fame, along with his "classic style". The overwhelming emotions have been his highest source of inspiration.
The exhibition also hosts lesser known works that explore the transition period faced by Rothko, during which, before joining to the Abstractism, experiments Fauvism and a highly personal form of surrealism. Another point of view addressed by the path of the Gemeentemuseum intends to highlight the difference between the American and European Abstract art , with a particular attention to the sizes and composition.
