The elementary shapes, lines, circles and rectangles created by Bridget Riley in the absolute contrast between black and white create a visual experience for the viewer related to the real world. The artistic experience of the artist, completely detached from any literary impulse and any intention of illustration, uses the marks on the canvas as a representation of the structure of the painting.
The reluctance to color, until now carried on with persistence by Riley, is due to the different perceptions that the viewer can have. Only since the late 60s some cautious colors are introduced in his works to be able to transmit a new dimension of movement and dynamism controlled by lines increasingly simple.
