Guy Bourdin: Image Maker is the largest ever retrospective on the revolutionary photographer's works. It is a selection of more than 100 pictures and inedit materials on display at Somerset House in London until 15th March 2015.
The search for beauty, the theme of life and death and sexuality are the elements that characterize the works of one of the most revolutionary artists of the twentieth century: Guy Bourdin. The desire comes true expression of one's being. Inspired from surrealism and countless other arts, the photographer is able to make ever unconventional his creations.
Bourdin became famous thanks to advertising campaigns and to had worked for Vogue France during the golden years, in collaboration with his friend-enemy Helmut Newton. His art does not stop at a constant search for perfection given by lines and colors, but is bearer of a clear message. His surreal, humoristic and erotic images propose investigations about taboos of society.
The power of his shots is the willingness to go beyond the shores of conventional advetising shot. Games, overlaps and juxtaposition of shapes and colors overwhelm the viewer. A woman walking elegantly set in an urban landscape or amazing unexpected bodies use color to overthrow the canons of reality. The works of Bourdin hide a story, but do not tell about it: they provide clues closed in a moment that seemed cought, but they do not leave space to what is behind.
