The new Ace Hotel is located in the heart of the historic district of Broadway theaters within the building that once housed the United Artist Theatre, one of the many cinemas that in the 20s and 30s characterized this area of downtown Los Angeles.
The design is a collaboration with the study Commune Design. The intent is to conjugate the glamor of Hollywood-'20s and modern minimalism to give the building a new life as part of a project to regenerate the entire Theatre District.
The exterior facade was stripped of terracotta and plaster to be subjected to a "interpretative" restoration. The Judson Studio has complemented it with a showcase of wood whose design is inspired by a Gothic work of Josef Hoffman. The concrete of the interior has been restored to exploit the bare minimalism.
