The Museum of the civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean (MuCEM) is one of the many buildings that have been made this year in Marseille, designated European Capital of Culture 2013. The project designed by Rudy Ricciotti is situated in the area of Fort Saint-Jean and pier Joliette.

The glass exterior of the museum is surrounded by a veil of cement, which seems made of lace, designed to create play of light and shadows that turn into curious chiaroscuro effects inside the two floors of the building. A slanted walkway which starts from the roof of the structure connects it to the Fort Saint-Jean and the nearby church Eglise Saint-Laurent.

The MuCem borns as atypical museum, with the intention to join the two
sides of the Mediterranean, a place of discussion and multicultural
exchanges without taboo. The structure is designed as a multifunctional
container that can host cultural events, exhibitions, musical
performances.
