Marseille, in 2013, is the European capital of culture and the contemporary art center FRAC is just one of many projects created for this occasion and to give a new face to the city. The assignment, awarded in 2007 to the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma through an international competition, is now completed.

The design of the structure is inspired by the Museum Without Walls on which Andrè Mairaux, famous French writer and politician, had fantasized during the 90s. The glass facade at street level allow us to glimpse the activities that take place within. The rest of the building is wrapped in a cloak instead of hinged panels that with its play of volume reflects light like a prism. Everything is designed and built to create a feeling of permebility and opening to the public with which it tries to maintain a constant interaction.
