The Vasarely Foundation located in Aix en Provence is the greatest heritage that the artist Victor Vasarely left to the French city. During the '60s, along with other architects and artists, creates a foundation aimed at spreading his concept of "art for all" and "City of Tomorrow" where art and architecture can coexist along with new technologies, science and computer science.

The design of the Vasarely Foundation, started materially in 1973, is part of a view that is developed in the late 60's which are attended by a large number of architects, including Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. Everything that was built in the utime decade with the intention of creating huge structures is called into question. The construction project of the Vasarely Foundation is based, such as the Centre Pompidou, on a permanent structure that will allow a reshaping of the space according to a basis of the lattice.

Vasarely designs, then, in a modular precast concrete hexagonal with the prediction of expanding the building to the creation of new spaces until reaching an overall rectangular plant, for this reason, each cell is designed as a construction its own right, independent from the others. The architects John Sonnier and Dominique Ronsserray are instructed to complete the work begun by Vasarely personally.
